[Gleneagles Golf Course Pre-Apprenticeship Training Academy]

Resolution in Support of Gleneagles Training Academy and Sustainable Golf and Recreation Initiative.
 

WHEREAS, The San Francisco Department of the Environment has been a national leader in integrated pest management since the City passed its Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Ordinance in 1996; and,
 

WHEREAS, All City properties, including golf courses, must comply with the IPM Ordinance; and,
 

WHEREAS, The City’s Recreation & Parks Department has successfully implemented IPM at all of its own golf courses, including the Sharp Park Golf Course, which is now pesticide-free; and,
 

WHEREAS, Lease holders of San Francisco City property are required to also comply with the IPM ordinance; and,
 

WHEREAS, The Department of the Environment has a history of supporting job training programs in the City of San Francisco that enhance knowledge of environmental protection and sustainability principles; and,
 

WHEREAS, The Gleneagles Golf Partners L.P. and the Laborers Community Training Foundation (LCTP) have forged a partnership to develop a Pre-Apprenticeship Training Academy for local youth from underserved communities to learn job skills in agronomy, IPM, arboriculture, the construction trades, first aid, communication skills, problem solving, and team building; and,
 

WHEREAS, The Pre-Apprenticeship Training Academy has already secured financial support and will benefit the community; and,
 

WHEREAS, the Gleneagles Academy mission statement also includes a commitment to “developing new best practices for sustainable golf and elevated environmental awareness through decreased water and pesticide usage”; and,  
 

WHEREAS, A Steering Committee of Labor, Government, Community, Non-profit and Business leaders has been formed to guide the Pre-Apprenticeship Training Academy, including staff from the Department of the Environment; now, therefore be it,
 

RESOLVED, That the San Francisco Commission on the Environment and the Department of the Environment finds that the objectives of the Gleneagles Golf Course Pre-Apprenticeship Training Academy consistent with Department of the Environment goals and initiatives to further IPM, sustainability efforts, and sustainable jobs training programs in the City.
