The Department of the Environment for the City and County of San Francisco (SF Environment) is seeking an intern to work with the zero waste program on education and outreach related to implementation of food ware and packaging ordinances.

SF Environment’s mission is to improve, enhance, and preserve the environment, and to promote San Francisco’s long-term environmental sustainability. SF Environment works on policy and programming in areas such as Zero Waste, Toxics Reduction, Environmental Justice, Transportation, Climate Change, Energy, Green Building, and Urban Forest.

Zero Waste is sending nothing to landfill or incineration. We think it is achievable, and SF Environment is doing everything we can to make it happen. Our Zero Waste team creates policies and programs that reduce waste and increase access to recycling and composting.

Intern Duties
The intern will support on-going outreach and monitoring of compliance with food ware ordinances such as, the Single-Use Plastics, Litter and Toxics Reduction Ordinance and the Food Service Waste and Packaging Reduction Ordinance.

Duties may include:

  • Tabling at retail sites to educate businesses about ordinance requirements
  • Visiting markets about polystyrene packaging, including meat and fish tray packaging, selling, and using certified compostable food service ware alternatives
  • Researching available products through both direct site visits and online research
  • Entering and managing project-related data on customer relationship management software.

Intern professional development

  • Learn about San Francisco's environmental policies, and SF Environment's role in creating and enforcing environmental policies.
  • Network with staff and consultants working on a range of environmental issues.
  • Learn about zero waste programs and policies, specifically related to single-use disposable food ware

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School/GED
  • Ability to perform independent field work throughout SF
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

Desirable Qualifications

  • Bilingual in a language commonly spoken in San Francisco
  • Experience with zero waste implementation

Appointment Type: Unpaid Internship

Notes: This position has the option to extend contingent upon interest, workload, demonstrated competence and professionalism. Participation in this program does not guarantee continued service with the City nor any future employment with S.F. Environment or the City and County of San Francisco.
