Healthy Nail Salon Program Internship

Start date: Negotiable, ideally January 2019.
Filing deadline: Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis through January 4th, 2019.
Time Commitment: 3-6 months, 16 hrs/week, depending on length of internship. The internship may be extended should SF Environment and the Intern mutually wish to do so. 

Internship Type:  For academic credit and/or stipend of $750 upon completion of internship. We can help with applications or any other materials needed to secure the credit (e.g. preparation of workplans and evaluations, meetings with academic advisors, etc.). The candidate will have the opportunity to make a real difference for the environment and worker health in San Francisco. Participation in this program does not guarantee continued service with the City, nor any future employment with SF Environment or the City and County of San Francisco.

Program Background: The Toxics Reduction & Healthy Ecosystems Program develops programs and policies to reduce the use of harmful chemicals among residents, businesses and municipal agencies. This internship opportunity will focus efforts on supporting the San Francisco Healthy Nail Salon program, a free and voluntary program with goals to reduce exposure of nail salon employees and clients to the toxic chemicals in nail products.

How you will make a difference:
You will have the opportunity to work on the following activities:

  • Outreach and technical assistance with nail salons in San Francisco
  • Drafting outreach and communication documents
  • Participate in Regional Healthy Nail Salon program coordination
  • Researching products and analyzing chemical ingredients
  • Assisting with administrative and logistical tasks

Minimum Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will have:

  • A passion for protecting the health of vulnerable populations
  • Experience with Word and Excel
  • A positive, can-do attitude

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to speak and write in Vietnamese
  • Experience or high level of comfort meeting and interacting with new people
  • Demonstrated ability in taking initiative, paying attention to detail, multi-tasking, and active listening
  • Public Health, and/or Environmental Studies academic background or work experience
  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program studying public health, environmental health, or similar
