San Francisco is a constantly changing city. In order to make our building construction and renovation as sustainable as possible, codes and policies have been enacted to divert waste from landfills, reduce energy and water usage, encourage alternate modes of transportation, and to improve indoor air quality.
Most of the San Francisco of the future has already been built. Existing buildings are a tremendous resource to our city, and the challenge is to protect our rich history while using fewer natural resources. Energy efficiency, water conservation, stormwater, toxics reduction, and zero waste policies help to improve the performance of the existing stock.
SF Environment’s Green Building Program works hand-in-hand with other teams within the department and the departments of Building Inspection, Planning, and Public Health, as well as the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission.
