With the inception of Mayor Gavin Newsom’s 2009 Executive Directive on Healthy and Sustainable Food, the City and Country of San Francisco adopted a comprehensive food systems policy to address nutritional standards, urban agriculture, regional food, hunger and food security, food business, and fisheries. Other City departments and local organizations support regulation and provide educational opportunities, leadership, or guidance for urban agriculture activity in accordance with their unique missions:
- San Francisco Green Schoolyard Alliance: Provides leadership for a greener public school system with school gardens, tree plantings, and other efforts
- General Services Agency: Manages a Community Challenge Grant fund for neighborhood beautification projects
- San Francisco Recreation and Park: Manages a Community Opportunity Fund for capital improvements to vital public spaces
- San Francisco Recreation and Park: Supports and manages community gardens on City-owned property
- Planning Department: Regulates urban agriculture zoning requirements
- Department of Public Health: Regulates animal husbandry and agriculture sales
