Some items should not go in the black, green, or blue bin. These items are hazardous waste. Improperly disposing of them can harm the environment and people. Plus, it's illegal. San Francisco residents can request a free home pick up of the waste, find a nearby drop-off location, or go to Recology's Household Hazardous Waste Facility.


Free pick-up service for household hazardous waste

  • Email hhw@recology.com with your name, address, phone number, and a photo of all your items or
  • Call 415-330-1405 and leave a message with your contact information
  • Appointments are available Wednesday to Saturday mornings
  • You must be present at the time of pick-up

Household Hazardous Waste Facility Requirements

  • You must bring proof of San Francisco residency (driver’s license or utility bill) to drop household hazardous waste at this facility 
  • Limit of 15 gallons or 125 pounds
  • No drums, compressed gas cylinders (except small or BBQ-sized propane) or containers larger than five (5) gallons
  • Keep hazardous items in their original containers. If an item is leaking, contain it by placing it in a larger container. 
  • Never mix leftover hazardous products with other products. Incompatible products might react, ignite, explode, and become unrecyclable.
