Port Program Recognizes Vessels That Exceed Industry Standards

SAN FRANCISCO, CA – The Port of San Francisco has awarded four ships with its prestigious Cruise Ship Environmental Award for 2005, in recognition of their excellent performance and on-board programs to reduce air and water pollution while operating in San Francisco Bay.

The award winners were Celebrity Infinity, Crystal Harmony, Dawn Princess, and Regal Princess. Each of these ships and their operating companies: Celebrity Cruises, Crystal Cruises, and Princess Cruises demonstrated a strong commitment to safeguarding the environment and exceeding industry standards. The three categories evaluated for the Port award were air emission reduction, wastewater treatment, and recycling and disposal programs for solid waste.

This recognition program was created by the Port's Cruise Terminal Environmental Advisory Committee (CTEAC). Established in 2003, CTEAC advises the Port Commission on cruise ship-related water and air quality issues. Committee members include regulatory agencies, environmental organizations, organized labor, community groups, and maritime industry representatives.

The Port of San Francisco congratulates these ships and the cruise lines on receiving the Cruise Ship Environmental Award, and we and thank them for their efforts in safeguarding the environment, said Peter Dailey, Port maritime director. "We are proud of the work that CTEAC has accomplished and appreciate the support of the cruise industry and our collaborative partners."

All the award-winning ships reduce air emissions in port by using low-sulfur fuel; in addition, Dawn Princess is equipped to plug into shore power. Currently shore power is available at cruise terminals in Juneau, Alaska, and Seattle, Washington, and is part of the design for the planned cruise terminal at San Francisco at Piers 30/32.

The Port of San Francisco is an enterprise agency of the City and County of San Francisco that oversees a broad range of maritime, commercial, and public-access facilities along the City's waterfront that are held in public trust for the people of California.
