Notice of Public Comment Period Regarding Adoption of
Regulations for the Safe Drug Disposal Stewardship Ordinance
(San Francisco Environment Code Chapter 22,
Division I, Sections 2200 through 2219)
Friday, September 15, 2023 to Monday, October 16, 2023
Members of the public are invited to provide written comments regarding proposed regulations for the Safe Drug Disposal Stewardship Ordinance (Environment Code Chapter 22, Division I, Sections 2200 through 2219). The Environment Department (Department) held a public hearing and public comment period regarding adoption of proposed regulations for the Safe Drug Disposal Stewardship Ordinance on March 6, 2023. The Department revised the March 2023 proposed regulations in response to public comments received and is holding a second public comment period regarding adoption of the revised proposed regulations. The 30-day comment period begins September 15, 2023 and ends October 16, 2023.
Written comments may be emailed to [email protected] or mailed to Attn: Safe Drug Disposal Stewardship Ordinance, San Francisco Environment Department, 1155 Market Street, 3rd Floor, San Francisco, CA 94103. The Department must receive all comments concerning the revised proposed regulations no later than 5:00 p.m. on October 16, 2023.

San Francisco Environment Code Chapter 22, Division I, Section 2214(a)
The Safe Drug Disposal Stewardship Ordinance (“Ordinance”) was signed by Mayor Edwin Lee on March 26, 2015, and became effective on April 25, 2015. The Ordinance requires any person who produces a covered drug offered for sale in San Francisco to participate in an approved stewardship plan for the collection and disposal of unwanted drugs from residential sources, as codified in the San Francisco Environment Code, Chapter 22, Division I, Sections 2200 through 2219 (“Chapter 22”). The Director of the Environment Department promulgates these regulations pursuant to his authority to adopt rules necessary to implement and administer Chapter 22 under Section 2214(a).
