Are plastic bags and plastic wrap recyclable in San Francisco?

You can recycle plastic bags and plastic wrap (soft plastic) by taking them to a plastic recycling location. Many local supermarkets and hardware stores recycle soft plastic.

What is soft plastic?
Soft plastic is any type of plastic that can be bunched up in your hand:

  • Plastic packaging - used for paper towels and toilet paper
  • Plastic film or wrap - used to cover and store food
  • Plastic bags - used for salad mixes, tortillas, or produce

Why can't soft plastic go in the blue recycling bin?
Soft plastic can not go in the blue recycling bin, because it can jam the recycling machines.

How can I reuse plastic bags?
Reuse plastic bags for your groceries, to line trash bins, or as doggie waste bags.
