Toxics Reduction & Healthy Ecosystems Internship (Unpaid)

Filing deadline: 11:59pm January 21, 2019

Start date: Negotiable, ideally February 4, 2019.

Time Commitment: 6 months to one year, 20 hrs/week, flexible hours and days. The internship may be extended should SF Environment and the Intern mutually wish to do so. 

Internship Type:  Unpaid Internship. Even though this is an unpaid internship, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to learn about many issue areas and contribute to making a real difference for the environment. SF Environment is a collegial, fun place to work! Participation in this program does not guarantee continued service with the City, nor any future employment with SF Environment or the City and County of San Francisco.

The mission of the City and County of San Francisco Department of the Environment (SF Environment) is to improve, enhance, and preserve the environment, and to promote San Francisco’s long-term environmental sustainability. SF Environment includes Zero Waste, Toxics Reduction, Environmental Justice, Clean Transportation, Climate Change, Energy, Green Building, Urban Forest and Public Information Programs. Program Background: The Toxics Reduction & Healthy Ecosystems Program develops programs and policies to reduce the use of harmful chemicals among residents, businesses and municipal agencies. We are currently working on the following issue areas: Eliminating flame retardant chemicals in furniture and children’s products, reducing antibiotics used in meat production, protecting pollinators, managing waste marine flare, and reducing chemicals in foodservice ware.

How you will make a difference:

You will have the opportunity to work on the following activities:

  • Research
  • Drafting policy and outreach documents
  • Conducting outreach to commercial businesses and residents
  • Assist in creating policies and programs that drive the use of safer products in San Francisco
  • Helping with administrative and logistical tasks

Minimum Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Passion to work in this field.
  • Experience conducting on-line research.
  • Experience with Word and Excel.
  • Positive, can-do attitude.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated ability in taking initiative; multi-tasking; attention to detail; active listening.
  • Team-oriented approach to completing projects, being flexible enough to juggle responsibilities with your team members.
  • Proficiency writing and speaking Spanish, Cantonese, and/or Vietnamese.
