Composting & Recycling (Administrative Bulletin 88)

Development projects in San Francisco are required to provide adequate areas for collecting and loading 100% of recyclable and compostable materials. This requirement is reflected in San Francisco Building Code 106A.3.3 and California Green Building Standards Code 5.410.1. Local implementing regulations are found in Department of Building Inspection Administrative Bulletin 88.

Adequate Refuse Space Design Guide and Calculator

Administrative Bulletin 88 requires adequate areas for a facility's refuse collection needs, but does not delineate what collection services are necessary for various building types. San Francisco's Adequate Space Design Guide supports designers and builders by providing clear guidelines related to space and safety in the design of refuse collection areas for newly constructed buildings in San Francisco.

For large new developments, the Adequate Refuse Space Calculator can estimate the square footage necessary to provide adequate space for recycling, compost, and trash service.
