“On Saturday, March 24 at 8:30 p.m., the City and County of San Francisco is joining millions of people across the world to celebrate our shared commitment to the environment during Earth Hour. For one hour, the City will turn off non-essential municipal building lights in a show of environmental solidarity. City Hall, Coit Tower, the Palace of Fine Arts – some of San Francisco’s most iconic structures – will all go dark as we participate in this global event and demonstrate our commitment to protecting the planet. City properties managed by Recreation & Parks, San Francisco Library and others will also be participating in Earth Hour.
I am asking residents and businesses to join this important World Wildlife Fund Earth Hour movement #connect2Earth. Switch off your lights and join millions around the globe as we unite and reenergize our commitment to protecting the planet.
San Francisco’s environmental track record is one of shared success. With businesses and residents working towards common sustainability goals, our city has been able to achieve a 28% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from 1990 levels, even as our population has grown by 19% and our economy has expanded by 79%. We have worked tirelessly to achieve these amazing results; that’s why we’re asking you to take part in this important global event. We can’t let up now. Simple actions have cumulative effects. This is how we make San Francisco a more sustainable place to live and work.”
