Fisherman's Wharf Merchants to be Recognized for Environmentally Friendly Practices

San Francisco, CA – SF Environment will honor Fisherman's Wharf businesses at their June 2nd monthly merchant membership luncheon for adopting environmentally friendly business practices.
Honorees include Scoma's Restaurant, The SF Maritime National Historical Park Association, The Red and White Fleet, The Blue and Gold Fleet, the Wax Museum, the Sheraton Hotel, Chowder's Restaurant, Neptune's Palace, Pier 23 Cafè, the Pier Market, Map West, Ghirardelli Square, the American Academy of Ophthalmology and Boudin Bakery.
Over the last few years these merchants have worked to implement practices and policies that lessen the impact on the environment. Some of these practices include implementing composting and recycling programs to divert materials from the waste stream; implementing energy efficient technologies in lighting, air-conditioning and refrigeration; implementing water conservation measures, a committed use of biodegradable containers, cleaners and industrial products, and developing standards for maritime equipment for the reduction of diesel emissions to name a few.
The Tuscan Inn, the Courtyard by Marriott, the Aquarium of the Bay and Pier 39 are enrolled in a process of becoming certified green businesses. The Green Business Program is a collaborative program between the Department of the Environment, Department of Public Health and the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission. In order to become a Green Business in San Francisco, an enrolled business must comply with all environmental regulations and meet program criteria for conserving resources, preventing pollution and minimizing waste.
There will be a separate recognition event for all certified green businesses the following evening, June 3rd at the Rodney Lough Jr. Wilderness Gallery at Pier 39.

"It gives us great pleasure to show our International guests that our community of businesses works hard to be better neighbors, better citizens and better leaders."
June 1-5, San Francisco will host United Nations World Environment Day conference 2005. During the conference, an international gathering of mayors will share ideas and experiences to develop a set of Urban Environmental Accords, which will provide a roadmap for environmental improvements in cities.
