Resolution commending the United States Postal Service San Francisco District for their collaboration with the San Francisco Department of the Environment’s Zero Waste Program.

WHEREAS, In July of 2014, the USPS-SF partnered with the City and County of San Francisco to execute a plan to train over 3,500 USPS employees at all 31 Post Offices within the City and County of San Francisco, including the San Francisco Processing and Distribution Center on effective ways to increase the collection of recyclable and compostable material, while at the same time repurposing and placing more than 300 new recycling and composting collection containers in high traffic areas at all of their San Francisco locations; and,

WHEREAS, The USPS-SF consequently reduced landfill service by an average of 70 percent at San Francisco Post Office locations resulting in significant cost savings projected to reach more than $200,000 dollars per year; now therefore be it,

RESOLVED, The San Francisco Commission on the Environment extends a commendation and its appreciation to the United States Postal Service San Francisco District for its partnership and dedication to divert compostable materials out of the waste stream and enhance existing recycling practices; and,

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, The San Francisco Commission on the Environment encourages other United States Postal Service districts to follow the outstanding example set forth by their San Francisco counterparts and adopt and implement similar Zero Waste practices.

I hereby certify that this Resolution was adopted by the Commission on the Environment at its meeting on March 22, 2016.
