Safe Drug Disposal Stewardship Ordinance

 


The San Francisco Board of Supervisors passed the Safe Drug Disposal Stewardship Ordinance (PDF) on March 17, 2015, with an Effective Date of April 25, 2015. The Ordinance factsheet (PDF) provides additional information on the background and requirements of the Ordinance.

Public Comment for Proposed MED-Project Stewardship Plan

The Environment Department held a comment period on MED-Project's proposed Product Stewardship Plan for Household Pharmaceutical Waste dated March 24, 2023. The 30-day public comment period ended May 22, 2023. More information, including the proposed Product Stewardship Plan and public comments received is available below.

The Environment Department held a comment period on Inmar's proposed Safe Drug Disposal Stewardship Plan dated April 22, 2023. The 30-day public comment period ended May 29, 2023. More information, including the proposed Stewardship Plan and public comments received is available below. 

Current Program

Medicine collection kiosks are operational under the Inmar Intelligence and MED-Project stewardship programs. Inmar and MED-Project are both supplementing the medicine collection kiosk sites with mail-back envelope distribution locations, where San Francisco residents can pick up a free, prepaid standard medicine mail-back envelope (for pill, liquid, and cream medicine formulations). Pre-filled injector products, such as EpiPens©, cannot be disposed in kiosks. Free prepaid mail-back packages for Pre-filled injector products are available at no cost by request online or by calling 844.633.7765.
